Six Days of Washington, D.C.

The god of scientific conferences sent me to Washington, D.C. - a place where I actually wasn't too fond of going to as I am not too fond of the US in general these days due to all things like Trump, NSA, their terror paranoia and stuff… However, I decided to swallow my prejudices (and I had to swallow hard when I filled in the online travel authorization thing which felt like a cerebral colonoscopy) and to look forward the trip.

Luckily, there was some free time and I could roam around the town. I actually thought Washington would be … cooler. I am Really sorry to say: Washington is … kind of … boring. Maybe the grey weather contributed to that impression but compared to many towns (capitols) I've been to there's not that much to see / to admire there. There's the Washington Mall (“mall” as in promenade, not shopping center) where you find the Capitol, the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. Then you find a couple of nice museums (the Smitonian museums are all free!!), the Arlington cemetery, the Tidal Basin, … and that's it for the most part.

🌍 Picture location – The Capitol, I guess the nicest building in town. There's also a great library which I couldn't visit.

🌍 Picture location – Some white house in a manicured garden. The owner doesn't like visitors as it seems. Fences and guards all around the house.

🌍 Picture location – Must be a youth hostel of some sort?

🌍 Picture location – Arlington cemetery. An ocean of graves.

🌍 Picture location

🌍 Picture location – School kids and soldiers lay a wreath at the grave of the unknown soldier. That was a totally unreal sight for me as the glorification of the military doesn't even stop at kids.

🌍 Picture location – Smithonian Natural History Museum. Nice but if you want to visit a real Natural History Museum go to London.

🌍 Picture location – Vandalism near an art museum?

🌍 Picture location – Smithonian Air and Space museum. That particular thing is a X-15 which was piloted in the early 60ies by Neil Armstrong at a speed of Mach ~6 to ~100km of height. That museum was pretty cool. Unfortunately they don't have the really good stuff in town. They have a hangar near Washington Dulles airport where they have a Concorde, the Space Shuttle and a SR-71 Blackbird.

🌍 Picture location – The Hubble space telescope. When I remember correctly a test build.
